The Resource Training
Center Set To Offer
“Recovery Coach Academy”
in Erie County.
Program aims to promote recovery by training
personal guides and mentors.
Amherst, NY – The Resource Training Center (TRTC) is now offering
the CCAR Recovery Coach Academy at its Amherst, NY location at 4255 Harlem Road,
according to Monica A. Farrar, MS CRC; CASAC-T, program director at TRTC’s
Amherst location.
The Resource Training
Center’s first Recovery Coach Academy training session begins on Monday, April
23, 2012. It will run from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. daily through Friday, April
27. The session will provide
participants with a comprehensive overview of the purpose and tasks of a
recovery coach and will explain the various roles played by the coach. The
training will discuss the tools and resources useful in providing
recovery-support services, and emphasizes the skills required to link people in
recovery to needed supports within the community. It will not cover clinical
services, which do not apply to recovery coaches.
The Recovery Coach Program
is open to any adult 18 or older; no previous experience is necessary. Those
interested can sign up for the training session by calling The Resource
Training Center at (716) 983.2258 or by visiting www.resourcetraining.org. Deadline
for application is April 13, 2012. The cost to attend the program is $300,
which includes books and supplies. The Recovery Coach Program is OASAS (the New
York State Office of Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Services) supported for
28.75 credentialing hours.
Recovery Coaching is a form
of strengths-based support for those with an addiction to alcohol, drugs or
other addictive behaviors, or those in recovery. Unlike licensed counselors and
therapists, however, Recovery Coaches cannot assess and/or offer treatment for
addiction and/or mental health problems and are not meant to be a substitute
for therapy. Recovery Coaches are helpful to clients making decisions about
what to do with their life and the part their addiction or recovery plays.
In addition, Recovery Coaches help clients find ways to stop
addiction (abstinence), or reduce harm associated with addictive behaviors. They
can also assist clients in finding resources for harm reduction, detox,
treatment, family support and education, local or online support groups or help
a client create a change plan to recover on their own.
Recovery Coaches are professionals
who have been trained to listen, observe and customize their approach to the
individual needs of their clients. They are trained to help clients resolve
ambivalence, increase confidence and motivation, and use a strengths-based
approach to addiction recovery.
“It is important to remember that not everyone who recovers from
alcohol or drug issues does so via formal Substance Abuse treatment, Alcoholics
Anonymous or Narcotics Anonymous; these people we don’t hear about in the
statistics,” says Farrar. “There are different avenues that can and do successfully
bring people to the same place. The Recovery Coach program is a much more
personalized approach that has proven to be a successful alternative or adjunct
option for many.”
