Mercy Hospital rolls out new cardiac procedure

Mercy Hospital has announced the addition of a new cardiac procedure, becoming the first area medical center to offer Totally Endoscopic Coronary Artery Bypass.

Totally Endoscopic Coronary Artery Bypass surgery, or TECAB, is the latest breakthrough in minimally invasive cardiac surgery, hospitals officials said in a news release.

The Catholic Health Heart Center at Mercy Hospital of Buffalo has announced that it is one of only a handful of centers nationwide offering this revolutionary procedure, which is performed “robotically” through tiny, fingertip-sized portholes, versus a large, 6-10 inch incision with traditional open-heart surgery. John Bell-Thomson, MD, chair of Mercy’s Cardiothoracic Surgery Department, is the only local surgeon and one of the few surgeons in the country performing the TECAB procedure.

Mercy Hospital, located in South Buffalo, is part of the Catholic Health System .
